Welcome to the West Somerset Rural Life Museum, located in the old school at Allerford, a self-supporting Registered Charity with a collection of over 7,000 artefacts from the Exmoor area, tracing the history of rural life from the early 1800s to the late 1950s. Our museum showcases everyday objects used by locals, farmers, and tradesmen, as well as an extensive photographic archive of West Somerset. Visitors can explore the exhibits in four areas of the old school premises, including the Main Hall, School Room, Archive Room, and Outside Displays. Our knowledgeable volunteers are happy to answer any questions and provide a unique insight into the region's rich history. We are open for the 2024 season with refreshed displays and a new gift shop. Arrive and get transported back in time to experience the sights, sounds, and smells of rural Somerset.
