Our Heritage and History
The Museum and Victorian School Room are situated in the charming old school of Allerford, generously provided to us by the National Trust. The school was constructed in 1821 and remained in use until 1981. In 1984, it was transformed into the Rural Life museum, which is owned and governed by a committee of Trustees. As a Registered Charity, we are self-supporting, and our dedicated team consists entirely of volunteers.
Allerford, a quaint village lying off the A39, is a mere five miles from Minehead and a single mile from Porlock. Rich in history, Allerford is home to captivating old cottages and a renowned Packhorse Bridge. The village is mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1085, making it a fascinating destination even outside the context of our museum.
Our Collections
Our museum's collection traces its roots to the efforts of the West Somerset Archaeological Society members. It now boasts several thousand artefacts, predominantly from the Exmoor area, ranging from clay pipes to ploughs. Upon entering the museum, you will be transported back in time, where you will likely recognise objects once commonly used by your parents, grandparents, local tradesmen, and farmers. The majority of the artefacts date from the early 1800s to the late 1950s and are artfully displayed in themed areas that encompass an extensive array of rural social history. Our extensive photographic archive of West Somerset is accessible for browsing, and engaging exhibitions of memorabilia are frequently organised.
The Victorian Schoolroom
The Victorian Schoolroom retains its original desks and benches, meticulously preserved, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in the educational experience of yesteryears.
