Earnings and Savings

Switching to a biomass boiler can provide significant financial benefits, including earnings through the government's Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) scheme and savings on fuel bills.

Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI)

The Domestic Renewable Heat Incentive (Domestic RHI) is a government financial incentive to promote the use of renewable heat. By switching to heating systems that use naturally replenished energy, such as biomass boilers, homeowners can help the UK reduce its carbon emissions and earn quarterly payments for seven years for the amount of clean, green renewable heat their system produces.

To be eligible for the Domestic RHI, you must be the owner of the renewable heating technology and own or occupy (or both) the property that it provides heat to. The payment for the year 1 April 2015 to 30 June 2015 is from 1,730 to 2,610, depending on the size of your system. You can use the Renewable Heat Incentive calculator to estimate how much you could earn with the RHI.

Example Savings

The savings you can make by switching to a biomass boiler will depend on a number of factors, including the type of fuel you are currently using and the size of your property. However, here are some examples of the potential savings that can be made:

  • Existing system: Electricity (old electric storage heaters)

+ Fuel bill savings: 490 to 880 per year

+ Carbon dioxide savings: 9,700 to 15,700 kg per year

  • Existing system: Oil (older, non-condensing)

+ Fuel bill savings: 130 to 140 per year

+ Carbon dioxide savings: 5,600 to 8,200 kg per year

  • Existing system: LPG (older, non-condensing)

+ Fuel bill savings: 970 to 1,390 per year

+ Carbon dioxide savings: 5,300 to 7,800 kg per year

Biomass Information

Biomass is a renewable energy source that is becoming increasingly popular as people become more aware of the limitations of non-renewable resources. Biomass refers to any flammable plant matter that can be burned to release energy in the form of heat. Biomass can be used as a fuel source for heating and power generation, and can be sourced from a variety of materials, including wood chips, pellets, and agricultural waste.

Where Biomass Comes From

Biomass is often created as a byproduct or waste product of other production processes. For example, sawdust and wood chips are often produced as waste products in the timber industry, while agricultural waste such as straw and corn stover can be used as biomass fuel. Fast-growing species of plants and trees can also be grown specifically for biomass production, ensuring that it is a sustainable and renewable energy source.

The Advantages of Biomass

One of the advantages of biomass as a fuel source is that it is nearly carbon neutral, meaning that it releases
