Our History
The Three Chimneys is a building rich in history, with origins dating back to circa 1420. Initially a simple country alehouse, the pub has since expanded yet never lost its authentic character. The name "Three Chimneys" stems from the French term for the junction of three roads (Les Trois Chemins) and was given during the Seven Years' War (1756-1763) when up to 3,000 French prisoners were kept at nearby Sissinghurst Castle.
Situated in the Weald of Kent, the surrounding area is steeped in history and natural beauty. The Weald, derived from the Saxon term for a forest, was once a vast wooded area. Gradual human settlement led to the clearing of large sections for farming and local industries. The Romans discovered abundant iron ore deposits in the sandstone of the Weald, leading to a thriving iron industry. Remnants of this industry can still be found near the Three Chimneys, which lies within the parish boundary of Biddenden. This quaint village is most famous for the legendary Siamese twins, Elisa and Mary Chalkhurst, whose legacy continues through the Chalkhurst Trust or Biddenden Dole.
