Transforming spaces, connecting communities

PPIY is a reputable architectural practice based in York, renowned for delivering high-quality designs that blend historical significance with contemporary innovation. With a strong commitment to preserving cultural heritage, we have been instrumental in the restoration and refurbishment of several listed buildings, transforming them into functional spaces for the modern age. Our team of skilled professionals is dedicated to crafting bespoke solutions that respect the integrity of each structure while meeting the needs of our clients.

Services Offered

At PPIY, we provide a comprehensive range of architectural services tailored to meet the unique requirements of each project. Our expertise spans across various sectors, including community, education, and ecclesiastical buildings.

Community and Education Projects

In 2018, we were appointed to design a volunteer's centre within York's Grade II* Listed Cemetery. The project involved the partial demolition of an existing building and the construction of a 156sqm extension, resulting in a modern and functional volunteers' centre. This project won the York Design Awards 2022 in the community/education category, demonstrating our ability to deliver distinctive contemporary designs that complement historical settings.

Currently, we are refurbishing the Joseph Rowntree Theatre, a Grade II Listed building from the 1930s. The scheme includes upgrading the Fly Tower Roof, refurbishing the Auditorium Roof, improving ventilation dormers, and installing an LED lighting upgrade. This project highlights our dedication to preserving historical theatres and transforming them into energy-efficient spaces.

Ecclesiastical Projects

We are proud to be involved in the reordering of the Malton Methodist Church, situated within a Grade II* Listed building. The project involves constructing a new three-storey extension to the rear of the church and refurbishing a neighbouring Grade II Listed Georgian dwelling. These projects showcase our ability to deliver modern and functional spaces that respect the historical significance of religious buildings.

At Minster Yard in York, we have designed a new extension and carried out comprehensive internal alterations to a Grade II Listed building, bringing it back into daily use. The project involved careful consideration of the existing fabric and the integration of modern elements that complement the historic setting.

Historical Analysis and Investigations

We undertake extensive historical analysis and investigations to determine the history of buildings and inform our design proposals. For instance, we commissioned a study of Woodlands, Bolton Percy, a Grade II Listed 19th-century dwelling, to refurbish the building and convert the water tower into additional accommodation.

Window Frames and Staircases

At PPIY, we believe that every aspect of a building, from a window frame to a staircase, should be carefully designed to suit its final purpose and highlight its heritage and history. We work closely with skilled craftsmen to ensure our projects are of the highest quality.
