Julie Richards Architecture & Design Ltd. is an architectural design practice based in Nottinghamshire, with a rich history dating back to 2002 in London. Our team has extensive experience in a diverse range of projects, from interior design and architecture to urban planning, spanning various scales and types. We are committed to delivering the highest possible design standards on every project we undertake, achieved through active listening, innovative design, and performance enhancement.

As the lead on each project, we guide clients through the conceptual idea to the final spatial proposal, including lighting and furniture design, as well as the specification of material finishes, furniture, fixtures, and fittings. Our work has garnered significant media attention, featuring in numerous editorial articles in UK and overseas press, design publications, RIBA Sector Reviews, television programmes, and film and photographic shoots.

Education and Professional Background

Julie Richards, the founder and driving force of the practice, studied at the prestigious Architectural Association School of Architecture in London, completing her RIBA Part I in 1996, RIBA Part II and AA Diploma in Architecture in 2000, and her RIBA Part III in 2005. During her studies, she gained invaluable experience at the Office of Zaha Hadid in London between her Part I and II coursework.

Upon graduation, Julie established her own practice, Julie Richards Architecture & Design Ltd., in London in 2002. She later founded Escapade Retreats Ltd. in London in 2010. Alongside her practice, Julie has been actively involved in academia, serving as a Lecturer in Architecture at the University of Nottingham's School of the Built Environment from 2003 to 2013. She is currently a committee member of NDSA (The Nottingham & Derby Society of Architects), a branch of the RIBA East Midlands, where she promotes architecture through events and activities.

Mainstream Practice

Our mainstream activity focuses on the design of projects at various scales and complexities, from green field locations to urban cityscapes. We have expertise in planning, conservation areas, and listed building issues, as well as the careful planning of whole areas, ensuring optimal environmental and commercial results.

Conceptual Projects

Our conceptual projects showcase our ability to produce 3D visualizations, photo images, and plan layouts, enabling clients to explore different layout options efficiently and present a wider range of possibilities in graphic form.

Interior Design Approach

Interior design is an integral part of our practice. We utilise visualisation techniques to create realistic 3D representations of interior spatial arrangements. Our interior design approach focuses on four interconnected aspects: spatiality, materiality, lighting, and furniture, as detailed in our manifesto.
