Our Story

At Degembris Farmhouse & Cottages, we are proud to continue a long-standing tradition of warm hospitality and high-quality accommodation in the heart of Cornwall. With a history dating back to 1915, our farm has been lovingly cared for over the generations, with each family member leaving their mark on this beautiful rural property.

Our Hosts

The Effords, Andy, Hannah, Nicholas, and Tegen, took over the reins of Degembris in 2009. Andy, a former primary school teacher, and Hannah, a mechanic, were drawn to the area's tranquility and the opportunity to bring up their children in a unique and idyllic setting. With a blend of their professional backgrounds, they brought a fresh perspective to the farm, ensuring that the traditional farmhouse bed and breakfast and self-catering cottages continued to thrive.

The Farm's History

James Matthew Woodley, a local farmer, purchased the Manor of Degembris in 1915. His family had been tenants at Degembris since 1893, and Uncle Matthie, a farmer by trade, operated the farm until his retirement in 1945. The Lutey family then took over the tenancy, followed by the Pryors in 1953. Upon his death in 1957, Degembris passed to Francis Oates Woodley, affectionately known as Frank, who had also farmed at the nearby family estate of Trenance. Frank's eldest son, John Roger Woodley, took over the reins in 1970, marking the beginning of a new chapter in Degembris' rich history.

Our Farming Heritage

Degembris' agricultural heritage is deeply rooted in its history. The farm, initially a mixed farm, diversified into an all-arable farm in 1982. Over the years, the farm has undergone transformations, including the conversion of the farm buildings into stunning self-catering cottages in 2003. Today, our farm remains a haven for local wildlife, with various flora and fauna thriving amidst the picturesque landscapes of woodland, open fields, rivers, and lakes.
