Keeping the heart of the village beating with every pint!
A Community Hub in the Heart of the Lake District
Nestled amidst the rolling hills and picturesque landscapes of the Lake District National Park lies The Old Crown, a true village hub with a rich history and a vibrant future. Established in the 18th century, this historic pub has undergone a remarkable transformation, becoming England's first registered co-operatively owned pub in 2003.
A Legacy of Craft Beer and Community Spirit
The Old Crown's story begins in the 1980s when Jim and Liz Fearnley dreamt of running their own pub and brewing their own beer. Taking a leap of faith, they purchased The Old Crown, transforming its barn into a microbrewery. Today, their legacy lives on as Hesket Newmarket Brewery, renowned for its award-winning beers.
A Community-Owned Treasure
When Jim and Liz eventually retired, the community stepped in to ensure the pub's survival. Driven by a desire to safeguard its unique character and prevent it from falling into corporate hands, 125 locals invested in the co-operative purchase in 2003. Today, The Old Crown stands as a testament to the unwavering spirit of the local community.
