Discover, Preserve, Conserve: Celebrating Deaf History and Culture

The British Deaf History Society (BDHS) is a volunteers-led organisation dedicated to promoting the discovery, preservation, and conservation of the histories of Deaf people, their communities, culture, and language. Established in 1993, our organisation has grown significantly over the years, and we are proud to offer a range of services that cater to the needs of our community.

Our Museum and Library

Our Museum and Library, located in the heart of Manchester, is a treasure trove of Deaf history and culture. The museum features a diverse range of exhibits, including paintings, sculptures, ceramics, and sports equipment, that showcase the rich heritage of Deaf people. Our library is a valuable resource for researchers, students, and enthusiasts, offering a vast collection of books, pamphlets, and archives on Deaf history.

Research and Publications

Our Research and Publications Department is committed to publishing high-quality books on Deaf history, which are available for purchase in our online shop. We also publish the Deaf History Journal three times a year, which features articles, reviews, and research papers on various aspects of Deaf history.

Events and Exhibitions

We organise conferences, seminars, and events throughout the year, which provide a platform for our community to come together, share ideas, and learn from each other. Our events are designed to be engaging, informative, and fun, and we encourage everyone to participate and get involved.

Support Us

As a charitable organisation, we rely heavily on donations and support from our community. Your support is vital in helping us to continue our work and share the collection with the world. You can donate online or visit our museum and library to learn more about our work.
