Welcome to the Jewish Joint Burial Society (JJBS), a registered charity that has been providing funeral and cremation services for the Jewish community in England since 1969. We are committed to serving the members of 46 synagogues, comprising of Reform, Masorti, Liberal and Independent communities, with over 17,000 members. Our aim is to alleviate the distress and financial burden that can accompany funeral arrangements, thereby providing a valuable benefit to synagogue members.
What We Do
The JJBS provides funerals for congregants of member synagogues in a conventional grave with headstone in the Western Cemetery at Cheshunt in Hertfordshire, where we have burial rights. In the rest of the country, synagogues use dedicated Jewish areas in municipal cemeteries. We offer burial options in a Woodland or lawn setting in the JJBS Woodland Cemetery at Cheshunt for Jewish and non-Jewish partners. Cremations in London typically take place at the Golders Green Crematorium, with ashes interred in the columbarium at the Woodland Cemetery.
We recognize the need for flexibility and offer services for non-members as well. When a member dies in the London area, the JJBS, in conjunction with the synagogue, makes all the funeral arrangements, whether it is a burial or a cremation, and covers the basic cost of the funeral. Outside London, the JJBS reimburses the synagogue for the cost of the funeral up to a fixed amount which significantly contributes towards the cost of the funeral.
JJBS Memorial Garden
As part of our commitment to providing comfort and support, we have established the JJBS Memorial Garden within the Western Cemetery. This peaceful and reflective space is open to all who wish to mourn or reflect during times of tragedy, such as the recent events in Israel. We stand in solidarity with the people of Israel and condemn the heinous acts of Hamas, hoping and praying for a lasting peace in the region.
Additional Services
In addition to our funeral and cremation services, we provide resources and guidance for those who have lost a loved one. Our comprehensive "What to Do When Someone Dies" guide offers practical advice and support during this challenging time. We also maintain a database of burials in our cemeteries, enabling users to search for those buried in our grounds. A Hebrew date calculator is available, as well as a full calendar of closure dates and a site map for our Woodland Cemetery.
