Reliability you can trust, safety you can rely on
MJ PAT Services, a family-run business established in 2006, has been dedicatedly serving businesses in Middlesbrough and the surrounding areas. With over 16 years of experience in Portable Appliance Testing (PAT), we have built a reputation for reliability and trustworthiness, becoming the go-to company for PAT Testing within the area.
Our primary objectives are to simplify the process of complying with Health & Safety regulations regarding PAT Testing for all types of businesses and promote a safe working environment. We aim to provide the best service that covers this crucial safety aspect, allowing you to focus on running your business. Although PAT Testing is not a legal requirement, the law mandates that businesses maintain their electrical appliances to ensure safety in the workplace. These tests should be conducted by a 'competent person' who can perform the checks swiftly and safely.
A 'competent person', according to the IET, is defined as "a person who possesses sufficient technical knowledge, relevant practical skills and experience for the nature of the electrical work undertaken and is able at all times to prevent danger and, where appropriate, injury to him/herself and others." At MJ PAT Services, we ensure our team is well-equipped and up-to-date with the latest training in PAT Testing.

What is Portable Appliance Testing?
Portable Appliance Testing (PAT) refers to the 'Inspection and Testing of In-Service Electrical equipment' and was introduced to enable companies and organisations to comply with the Electricity at Work Regulations. It involves the creation of a program for the inspection and electrical safety testing of portable appliances, ensuring adherence to the following legislation:
- The Electricity at Work Regulations
- The Health & Safety at Work Act 1974
- The Management of Health & Safety at Work Regulations 1999
- The Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992
- The Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998
Do I Need My Portable Electrical Appliances Tested?
To comply with the aforementioned regulations, it is necessary to routinely inspect and test all portable electrical appliances. These regulations apply to all businesses, regardless of size, and self-employed individuals.
What Electrical Equipment Needs to Be Tested?
The regulations cover all items of in-service electrical equipment, including:
- Handheld appliances
- Portable appliances
- Moveable equipment
- Stationary equipment
These appliances can be found in various settings such as offices, construction sites, hospitals, schools, and even the fire brigade. At MJ PAT Services, we have the expertise and experience to test a wide range of electrical equipment, providing businesses with a comprehensive and reliable PAT Testing service.
