Working beyond the ordinary

At Span Engineering, we specialise in providing civil and mechanical engineering services in difficult to access areas, such as those at height, within confined spaces, or over water. With a wealth of experience spanning over 25 years, we have the knowledge and expertise to find effective engineering solutions to even the most challenging access issues. From the initial commission to the completion of a project, we focus on delivering the most effective result for your project, while ensuring safety, efficiency, and cost-effectiveness.

Inspection Services

The Span Engineering team has an extensive background in difficult access structures inspection across the globe. We have worked on complex projects on some of the world's tallest buildings, landmark bridges, and architectural structures. Our inspection services include visual and tactile inspections, investigative techniques such as covermeter surveys or UTM gauging, material sampling such as core drilling and carbonation testing, and NDT techniques such as half-cell potential testing. We produce in-house inspection reports in hard and electronic copy with CAD drawings and extensive photo records. We specialise in working on large and unique structures, those with unusual access problems, major landmark viaducts, and more complex structures such as moveable bridges. Many of the structures we have worked on are heritage listed or have other constraints requiring a unique access solution. We can supply a complete examination package, including boat cover, pontoons, MEWP's and other ancillaries, or work alongside our client's own staff to provide safety supervision and assistance with their examination requirements.

Bridge Inspection

=============

We carry out road, rail, and pedestrian bridge examinations throughout the UK, working on single arches to multi-span viaducts in all material types. We have worked on suspension, cable stayed, masonry, concrete, metal, and moveable bridges around the world. We have been carrying out difficult access bridge examinations on the UK rail network since 2003. Our key staff are NR STE 4 qualified, IRATA Level 3 supervisors, and confined spaces certified. We carry out Examinations for Assessment, Detailed Examinations, and Additional Examinations on over, under, and intersection bridges across the rail network. We perform Principal and General Inspections on Highway structures, and inspections of aqueducts and overbridges on waterways. For all bridge works, we prefer wherever possible to use rope access techniques, which offer a flexible, efficient, and cost-effective solution.

Installation & Maintenance Services

We provide a range of installation and maintenance services for projects at height, including those in confined spaces or over water. Our services include the installation and maintenance of safety systems, such as fall protection and arrest systems, lifelines, and anchorage points. We also provide maintenance services for mechanical and electrical equipment, such as motors, pumps, and valves, and provide a range of fabrication and welding services.

Height Safety

At Span Engineering, we prioritise height safety in all our projects. Our team of highly experienced technicians is trained to work to internationally recognised IRATA standards and UK HSE guidelines. We use a range of techniques and equipment to provide safe and efficient solutions for projects at height, including the use of powered access platforms (MEWPs), scaffolding, temporary staging, tensioned netting, or bespoke access systems. We ensure that all Industrial Roped Access work is carried out safely and efficiently, providing a flexible and cost-effective solution.

Confined Spaces

We conduct wet and dry confined space work under the UK HSE Confined Space Regulations 1997, and client-specific procedures, depending on the nature of the project. Our operational staff are certified and suitably experienced in confined space works, ensuring that all work is carried out safely and efficiently. Prior to the commencement of work, we evaluate each project carefully and produce a Risk Assessment and Method Statement, which details the method of access and egress, possibly in conjunction with rope access or specialist rigging, and any necessary permits to work and rescue systems, which may be need to be pre-installed.

Working on Water

We work over and upon watercourses and estuaries, using inflatable and rigid craft, and utilise dry suits and swift water techniques where necessary to complete projects working in the watercourse itself. We supply safety boats and pontoons for in
