Coolham Airfield

The site of a former Advanced Landing Ground, a temporary airfield built to support the D-Day landings in 1944 and only used for a few months. Construction began in August 1943 and was complete by the beginning of March 1944. Coolham airfield was one of seven Advanced Landing Grounds which were built in Kent and Sussex in 1943 and 1944 to ensure air superiority during the greatest coastal invasion in history, as the Allied Forces landed in France on June the 6th 1944 to begin the task of freeing the oppressed nations of Europe from Hitler's armies. The first mission was flown on April 26th. Missions were flown virtually every day during May and June. Activities on the Airfield were terminated on the 15th of July 1944. Altogether some 7 fighter squadrons were based at Coolham.

Horsham Heritage Trails

This is a walk that will give you a brush with history, that spans continents and the centuries. You will be made welcome at the Selsey Arms pub which has stood at Coolham for over 300 years, with links to smugglers and more recently with the allied airmen who served at the Coolham airbase in 1944. In the late 1820's the road from Cuckfield to Billingshurst was pegged out by Sir Charles Burrell of Knepp and your walk will start on the straight section of road from Coolham towards Billingshurst. At the first bend, you will follow the signs to the Blue Idol, the Quaker Meeting House founded by William Penn. Penn's legacy went on to include the founding of Philadelphia and the colony that became the State of Pennsylvania.

Nyetimber Vineyard

The story of Nyetimber is one of decades of craftsmanship, passion, and a pioneering spirit. Our uncompromising attention to detail and singular desire to produce wines worthy of the most joyous of celebrations, drives us to create the very finest expressions of the Estate. Spread across several separate sites, our vines are perfectly suited to the greensand and chalk soils of Sussex, Hampshire and Kent. The gentle south-facing slopes allow for the best possible exposure to the English sunshine, ensuring our grapes achieve the optimum level of ripeness before harvest.

  • "Just had a Sunday roast, and it was the best roast dinner we have had in years. Great portions, all really tasty. The vegetarian option was different and very good. Friendly staff and pub dog. Will definitely go again." - Tara G, September 2023
  • "The place was very welcoming and warm plus the meals were fabulous. But most of all the staff went out of their way to help me when I suffered an asthma attack during lunch. I would like to say thank you to all of them, especially Abby who calmed me down when I was panicking and gasping for breath. Lovely place. If you are in the area I totally recommend you go there Thanks all xx" - Katherine B, December 2023
